Janus (valfrändskap)

Stainless steel, coin slot and fabric

2024

The Janus effect is the name ascribed to an entity that possesses the ability to interact in a simultaneously authoritative and dependent role. One example is government, which wields power over it’s people, but depends on their approval. The word originates from the roman god Janus, whom with his two faces had the ability to see both into the past and into the future.

The fabric in this work is an old reused chroma key fabric commonly used for manipulating video material, both as a means for envisioning beyond reality, as well as to deceive. The color tones of the fabric and the shape of the work also bears a resemblance to Swedish voting booths, used during our democratic elections.

Installed in the exhibition Naturtillståndet at Galleri konstepidemin, 2024.
