Janus

chromed steel and chroma key fabric

2023

The Janus effect is the name ascribed to an entity that possesses the ability to interact in a simultaneously authoritative and dependent role. A good example is government, which wields a certain power over it’s people, but depends on their approval. The word originates from the roman god Janus, whom with his two faces had the ability to see both into the past and into the future.

The fabric in this work is an old chroma key fabric commonly used for manipulating video material, both as a means for envisioning beyond reality, as well as to deceive. The color tone of the fabric and the shape of the work also bears a resemblance to Swedish voting booths, used during our democratic elections.

Installed in the exhibition Landet ingenstans at Ahlbergshallen, 2023.
